You will be training from fully MCA licensed dive boats in the most beautiful and unique marine environment in the UK.

BSAC Boat Handling Course

A two day course on powerboat handling specifically aimed at divers.

AIM: To introduce boat handling skills to those who will be driving powerboats to and from dive sites and supervising other divers.
This course is suitable for all levels of diver.

DURATION: 2 Days

PRE REQUISITES: None but a basic knowledge of diving would be useful.

COURSE CONTENT:

  • ·    Different craft and their equipment
  • ·    Launching and recovery
  • ·    Basic boat handling
  • ·    Anchoring
  • ·    Laying and recovering shot lines
  • ·    Dropping and recovering divers
  • ·    Person overboard procedure
  • ·    Voyage planning General Safety

The two days are largely practical with some short shorebased sessions. We have a maximum of three students per instructor and boat. You will spend time both driving and crewing. The course is taught using our MCA coded RIB and included in the course fee is the BSAC Boat Handling Course Pack and BSAC Certificate (there is an extra £10 charge for non BSAC members).

BSAC Diver Cox'n

A four and a half hour direct assessment for experienced power boaters - specifically aimed at divers.

AIM: The aim of the Diver Cox’n assessment is to assess a candidate’s practical boat handling skills, and the underpinning knowledge related to the general handling of small boats and to diving specific boat handling activities. The CDA Diver Cox’n Certificate will be awarded to those who demonstrate competence in the handling and management of a small powerboat.

DURATION: Half Day

PRE REQUISITES:

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 or BSAC Boat Handling Certificate
  • Five hours driving experience logged since taking the boat handling course or 20 hours logged experience as driver
  • Minimum age 16
  • We also strongly recommend that candidates have completed a RYA SRC Radio Course.

ASSESSMENT CONTENT: The assessment comprises three sections:

Voyage Planning, Practical Boat handling and Theory Knowledge. Failure of any part means failure of the whole.

  • Voyage planning: (taking consideration of local tidal conditions on the assessment day, and the times of high, low and slack water, as well as the inshore weather forecast). Preparation and checking of the boat.
  • Practical Boat Handling: Open water handling – high speed, Confined water handling, Anchoring, Dropping and recover a shot line, Man overboard simulation, Dropping and recovering divers, Coming alongside, Approaching a shelving shore and Recovery onto trailer.
  • General Theory: Safety equipment to be carried – See the CDA publication “Guidelines for the Safe Operation of Member Club Dive Boats” available from BSAC HQ. Emergencies – radio operation, Mayday and Pan Pan calls, engine failure procedure, overdue divers procedure and emergency signals. Knots – clove hitch, round turn and two half hitches, anchor bend, reef knot and bowline. Rules of the road – collision avoidance, head-on, crossing and overtaking situations, factors likely to influence a vessel’s ability to manoeuvre. Navigation lights. Buoyage, identification of lateral buoys & Cardinal buoys, general buoyage.

BSAC Chartwork and Position Fixing - A two day intermediate powerboat course looking at practical navigation aboard a small powerboat.

AIM: To instruct divers in the basic techniques of marine navigation to a level which will help them as active divers in planning and managing dives undertaken by a typical BSAC Branch. (The course comprehensively covers the requirements of Dive Leader lesson LT7 and is a training option for BSAC Advanced Diver).

DURATION: Two Days

PRE REQUISITES:

  • ·     BSAC Boat handling certificate or RYA Level 2 Certificate
  • ·     BSAC member.

COURSE CONTENT: During this course you will plan and undertake two voyages, one by GPS and one by traditional navigation. Subjects covered include Charts and their interpretation, The Compass Rose, Position, Direction and Distance, Methods of Position Fixing, Tides and Weather, GPS Navigation, High Speed Navigation and practical application of. Berthing between piles, Mediterranean moorings, entering and leaving locks.

BSAC Diver Training

 

Ocean Diver
This course provides you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to prepare for open water diving. Learning to dive is all about learning to use your equipment properly and safely. The Ocean Diver training course concentrates on preparing you for this in the safety of a swimming pool or sheltered water and then introducing you to open water in a controlled and safe manner. This also gives you the opportunity to practice safety skills in the company of a qualified instructor or experienced diver.

  

 

BSAC DIVER TRAINING

 

Sports Diver
In Sports Diver training, the emphasis is on building a sound foundation of open water diving skills and experience through a series of structured practical lessons. Once you have gained this open water experience with a qualified instructor, you are ready to take part in dives with other Sports Divers or those of higher grades.

 

Dive Leader
Dive Leader training concentrates on the responsibilities and safety aspects of leading other divers on an open water dive. Practical lessons in rescue management and rescue skills will give you the confidence and ability to deal with those unforeseen emergencies. Leading a dive will develop your enjoyment, confidence and experience as a diver.
