2005

December:

Flagpoles at Celtic Diving Base have sprouted illuminated fir trees, Nick and Jill Chilton of the Fishguard Garden Centre have assured us that this is only a seasonal phenomena !

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !

November:

Our annual diving trip this year was to Cyprus.

Here are a couple of photos from the famous Shipwreck Zenobia:

October:

We have now been granted kind permission from United Utilities to dive Llys-y-Fran reservoir.

This means that whatever the weather we will not have to reschedule or cancel diver training.
The site is only a twenty minute drive from our premises it is safe and easily accessible; we can drive the Landy up to the waters edge.
There is another bonus; the water is not salty so we do not have to rinse our gear after diving !

Celtic Diving volunteered Janhazel for a day with the kids from Belarus. A great deal of whooping and squeals were heard as we did some wave riding, sharp turns and emergency stops.

As you can see from these video stills, a great time was had by all !

"SuperPod" of dolphin sighted off the Pembrokeshire coast !

(Photo: Janet Baxter)

Cliff Benson of SeaTrust has reported to us and the national press the phenomena of an enormous pod of dolphin that has occurred in our waters. Up to 2,000 of the mammals are either feeding or breeding together spectacularly. The sea has been literally boiling with them attracted by the warm waters - Long live the "Dolphin Coast" !

Latest on Fishguard Sub-Aqua Club find of the possible Napoleonic shipwreck from 1797 invasion attempt. Richard Hughes, the club's diving officer, has told us: "The chap we're dealing with is Steve Webster of Wessex Archaeology, we have had much discussion on the era of the wreck and until recently it was looking doubtful whether it was from the era of pre 1797 ... but we have now discovered in parallel but unconnected research that the French were using this type of iron technology in ship building as early as 1670 .... it seems we are back on the tracks of a possible French vessel"

GOODWICK BENEFITS - Celtic Diving GET new DIVE BASE  !

Celtic Diving have now moved their dive base from Main Street, Goodwick to the former Watersports Centre at Goodwick Parrog. The premises are ideally suited being prominent, with easy access to the sea.

Initially Celtic Diving will provide the following sports and facilities: PADI sports diver training, supervised diving expeditions, boat charter, sale of diving equipment, overnight accommodation, RYA power boating, conservation and environmental activities.

Mark Deane CEO of Celtic Diving stated: “We have entered into a lease/partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council on this project and are extremely happy with the support we have received and the efficiency with which the council have helped us settle in. We will be delighted to assist and offer facilities for any of the usual sports and community based events that take place in Fishguard and Goodwick such as the Festival of the Sea, the Goodwick Triathlon, Lions Fun Day and Fish Week.

Celtic Diving will be gauging the level of interest in sea kayaking, RYA sailing tuition and windsurfing. If there is enough demand for this to be a viable proposition then it will make economic sense to offer these sports alongside the sub-aquatic pursuits.”

It is clear from the success of Celtic Diving over the past three years that there has been a rising demand for water sport amenities in this area. The Pembrokeshire coast is a superb environment which appeals to both residents and visitors looking for new water-based experiences.

As well as commercial operations; the centre will accommodate both the local Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and those from other areas. (Click here for a link to Duke of Edinburgh Awards in Pembrokeshire) There are also plans for a local Coast Care group to be formed after the success of recent beach cleanups organised by Celtic Diving.

With full support from Seatrust South & West Wales the wildlife conservation charity based in Pembrokeshire. One of the main targets for Celtic Diving this year is to achieve status as a National Geographic Diving Centre; this is an important conservation, educational and environmental initiative that will compliment the policies and orientation that the company focus on especially with regard to operating in a wildlife sensitive area.

Set for a steady expansion of the facilities in line with demand and resources Celtic Diving is looking forward to an exceptional season.

Celtic Diving Limited is entirely funded by its own investments.

This purpose built facility has a slipway, free parking, large classroom area, office, equipment room, drying area, accommodation for 16, male and female changing/shower rooms.

February:

Monday the 14th we received a coastguard shout, the tugboat "Intrepid B" was sinking in Fishguard Harbour. There was nothing anyone could do initially as gale force winds were blowing in from the north.

A team from Wijsmuller, the Dutch salvage experts were called in. Celtic Diving has supported the operation supplying breathing gas and diving equipment. Efforts have been hampered by the weather but pumping started on the 27th.

Sadly diesel spillage has occurred which has had an impact on the environment. The cockle beds are contaminated and dead eels have been found on the beach.

Beach clean up bill for comic relief

Mark Deane, owner of Celtic Diving and Cliff Benson, Chair of Sea Trust South and West Wales had been monitoring shore birds and gulls after the sinking of the Tug, “Intrepid B” in Fishguard Harbour.

Though the birds seemed healthy, the storms that sunk the tug had washed all sorts of litter onto the beaches in Goodwick.

Said Mark, “I suggested to Cliff that we could arrange a beach clean up and he agreed as he felt the debris which included fishing line and netting represented a threat to wildlife as well as being unsightly.

Mark was already in touch with William Low of Keep Wales Tidy who kindly delivered rubbish bags and other equipment for the clean up.

It was joked that someone ought to pay for this bearing in mind the recent article about a man who reckons he owns some of the beaches in Pembrokeshire, having bought a title.

The notion that someone could buy and sell our beaches at an auction seems odd so we wanted to make a joke of it.

It was then decided we could raise some money for Comic Relief by doing the beach clean up and then send the Lord a bill.

After all with ownership come responsibilities. If he is really serious, then I am sure he will pay up especially as it is for a good cause.

Fifteen volunteers from Fishguard and Goodwick took part in the clean up on Saturday afternoon, collecting 12 bags full of non biodegradable rubbish. “It took us an hour and we got finished just in time for the rugby” said Mark.

“We reckon a tenner an hour each would be about right so the Lord will be sent a bill for £150.00. A princely sum perhaps, but a right royal bargain we think!”

This is the kick start for our Coast Care group, all are welcome to join.
We will be using our dive boat Janhazel to clean up remote beaches and bays in the near future.
