Neptune's Army of Rubbish Collectors Underwater Cleanup

Any active UK divers (min qualification PADI AOWD or BSAC Sports Diver) interested in joining this kind of event should contact David Kennard of NARC on 01437 768260

Celtic Diving fully supported a NARC underwater cleanup as part of the Keep Wales Tidy Week at Fishguard Harbour 17/09/06 which was covered by ITV News.

Both the Northern and Eastern Breakwaters were cleaned as well as Pen Anglas Point.

A number of disused lobster pots lost in storms still "ghost fishing" were recovered and a hapless undersized baby lobster was released.

Wandrin Star /Sulaire Surveys 09/09/06

With unprecedented reports of Bottlenose dolphin activity south of the Cardigan Bay Marine Special Area of Conservation,  Sea Trust and Cardigan Bay Marine Wildlife Group, combined efforts/resources for a pilot study using two boats.

CBMWG surveying from the north aboard "Sulaire" and Sea Trust from the south aboard Celtic Diving's "Wandrin Star".

The mission was to survey from Newquay in the north to Fishguard in the South rendezvousing half way at Cardigan Island.

Both vessels encountered dolphins and porpoises. Useful photo ID was substantially achieved as were all goals of the exercise. We had some very exciting sightings and were able to see the animals at close quarters as they started bow riding. This is a first and shows the value of local groups of experienced volunteers working together to achieve maximum synchronised and comprehensive coverage of a large target area. Also the benefits of working with local businesses.

The conclusion is that the Cardigan Bay Marine Special Area of Conservation should be extended by about ten miles to Strumble Head in the south from its present southern boundary adjacent to Ceibwr Bay.

Strumble head is the natural southern geographical boundary of Cardigan Bay and this year alone has provided sightings of Common, Risso's and Bottlenose Dolphins, Minke, Fin and Humpback Whales. It is also probably the most important single breeding area for Harbour Porpoise in Wales/ Southern Britain

Photographs will be compared and analysed  in Newquay by CBMWG volunteers and published on our websites ASAP

These surveys were licensed by the Countryside Council for Wales. To intentionally disturb or harass cetaceans without such a licence is illegal and offenders can be fined and imprisoned.

The Wildman Cometh !

Iolo Williams BBC television wildlife presenter has taken PADI Diver training this month with Celtic Diving in order to observe marine wildlife, particularly seals in his new "Wildman" series - Celtic Media Services Ltd filmed the underwater footage.

Iolo has proved to be a great student and has become a very competent diver. We had some very memorable experiences during training and also out in the open water searching out the wild and wonderful sea life of the North Pembrokeshire coast.

"I now realise that I have been walking around with one of my eyes closed, having ignored the underwater environment for so long. Diving off the Pembrokeshire coast was a fantastic experience and the variety of wildlife was absolutely incredible !"
